Registering your discount domain names is your first step to setting up your affordable presence on the web. Anytime anyone wants to visit your website they can simply enter your domain name into their web browser and hit enter. The browser then asks their Internet service provider's nameserver for directions on how to get to that address.

The nameserver will return the physical Internet Protocol (IP) address of the web server your site resides on. This number will look something like 209.147.28.155. The visitor's browser will then navigate to the home page of that web address (or whatever file is specified there).

Finding Your Discount Domain Names
So where do you get a discount domain name? Top level domain names, such as those ending in .com, .org, or, .net, are managed by a nonprofit organization called The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). ICANN in turn certifies domain registrars which are allowed to distribute domain names commercially. So how do you register discount domain names? First, you must search the domain name whois database, maintained with the cooperation of all registrars, to check the availability of your domain name. Once you've chosen a domain name and checked its availability, it's time to register the name. This process begins by purchasing the rights to use the domain name for a given contract length, usually one or two years, from a certified registrar.
